Customer Owned Gas Pipe Maintenance Notice
Dear Customer:
You are receiving this notice because: 1) you are a new customer, 2) you have moved within the city limits, 3) our records indicate that you have a customer owned natural gas line running underground from your gas meter to a structure or a gas burning appliance, or 4) you have requested installation of a natural gas service line and may, at your discretion, install a natural gas line running underground from your gas meter to a structure or a gas burning appliance. As your natural gas distributor, Rock Rapids Municipal Utilities (RRMU), in accordance with federal regulations, is making you aware of certain safety recommendations regarding your underground natural gas piping.
RRMU does not maintain the gas piping down-stream of the gas meter (piping on the customer side of the meter). This is the responsibility of the customer who owns that piping. If the buried pipe is not properly maintained, it may be subject to corrosion (if the piping is metallic) and/or leakage.
To ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of these lines, the buried piping should be checked periodically. You (or the building owner) are advised to contact a plumber or heating contractor to assist you in locating and inspecting your buried gas piping. If any unsafe condition is discovered, repairs should be made as soon as possible. The Yellow Pages are an excellent source for listings of plumbers and heating contractors. RRMU will be available to locate and check your underground piping for leaks with its leak detection equipment for a nominal fee. However, any repairs, replacements, re-locations, etc. must be done by your plumber or heating contractor.
If we can answer any questions regarding this notice, please give us a call at (712) 472-2511. If you install/abandon buried piping down-stream from the gas meter or if you change any of your buried piping, please let us know.
If you plan to dig around buried gas piping, the piping, as well as all other buried utilities, must be located in advance and all digging should be carefully done by hand in the vicinity of the pipe. Any person planning excavation activities is required to contact Iowa One Call at their toll free number, 811 or (800) 292-8989 at least 48 hours prior to commencement of the planned excavation, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. This is a free service.
Sincerely,
James E. Hoye, General Manager
